Cities like NYC boast established networks for libraries, schools, and emergency services. Yet, the city lacks specialized hubs that could streamline its operations. The Carbon Zero City strategy advocates for developing a network of Urban Hubs to address issues like micro cargo, micro transit, waste management, and public sanitation.

MICRO CARGO: A Paradigm Shift is Underway

Micro cargo is booming. Package deliveries in NYC have rocketed from 1.8 million a day in 2028  to 3.6 million a day in 2023. That has led to an increase of wear and tear on roads, and road congestion. Trucks, account for 90% of NYC freight, exacerbate air quality issues, traffic congestion, safety hazards, and reduce quality of life.

INCREASING NUMBER OF DAILY DELIVERIES
The package delivery market surged 50% in just two years, now totaling 3.6 million packages daily. Trucks, accounting for 90% of NYC freight, exacerbate air quality issues, traffic congestion, safety hazards, and reduce quality of life.

Cargo in NYC will continue to grow.
Today, of the 365 million tons of cargo that enter, leave, or pass through NYC each year, 89% is carried by a truck. In 2045, the same proportion will be delivered by truck, however, tonnage is expected to grow by 68% to 540 million tons (source NYC DOT)

INCREASING ANNUAL TONNAGE
NYC's cargo market is expected to rise from 365 million tons in 2020 to 540 million tons by 2045, according to DOT forecasts.

The market is encouraging modal evolution: Leading the evolution are a variety of modes, most notably the quad with its higher capacity. Two quads generally have the capacity of one van.Addressing the dramatic increase in package deliveries, companies are exploring various modes. For some deliveries, basic bikes are best, while for others requiring higher capacity, new quads from Europe are becoming popular. Innovations can significantly enhance infrastructure efficiency, particularly with the integration of Urban Hubs.

Bikes

BIKES
Ideal for couriers, food delivery, and local businesses. Companies like Joco, Whizz, and Zoomo rent and lease bikes to couriers.

Bikes +

BIKES +
Cargo bike-trailer combos offer efficient transport with reinforced frames and spacious trailers, popularized by companies like Dutch X.

Trikes

TRIKES
These 3-wheeled options are ideal for urban, last-mile deliveries, surpassing vans and e-bikes in agility and capacity, exemplified by Hub NYC.

Quads

QUADS
With higher capacity, quads are ideal for urban deliveries and industrial logistics, offering twice the capacity of conventional vans. Suppliers include Fernhay and EAV.

Micro Transit: NYC Needs Much More than Citibike

NYC Comptroller Lander highlights the risks associated with a potential shift in ownership from Lyft and rising maintenance costs that could destabilize the service. Urban Hubs aim to address these long-term concerns with CitiBike by offering more options and alternative surface transit solutions, especially in response to subway disruptions from climate-related events.

Garbage: Does Not Disappear by Itself (— Mayor Bloomberg)

New York City faces a significant garbage problem that affects public health and urban competitiveness. Accumulated waste breeds pests, spreading diseases and impacting respiratory health. As a global hub, NYC's garbage issues tarnish its image and deter business and tourism, affecting economic competitiveness. Innovations in waste management hubs and improved recycling programs could address these challenges, enhancing waste collection, sanitation, and disease control.

Urban Populations

NYC, Garbage Capital
NYC generates 12 thousand tons of waste daily, an increase of 375 tons in five years, driven by population growth and e-commerce.

Public Toilets are an Urban Necessity

Looking for a Loo in NYC? Boosting the number of public toilets in NYC is crucial, safeguarding a fundamental right while driving economic prosperity. A lack of adequate facilities compromises the city's reputation. Borough President Levine's public toilet initiative aims to address the lack of public restroom facilities in New York City by advocating for the installation of clean, accessible, and well-maintained public toilets throughout the city. Carbon Zero seeks to improve sanitation, public health, and quality of life for residents and visitors in FiDi while also boosting tourism and supporting local businesses in the process.

TOILETS IN UNUSED RETAIL
FiDi has 22% retail vacancy, much of which is in tired buildings. Pedestrianization and transformation of FiDi into a carbon zero capital would likely make public toilets economically viable.
