Local Law 97 (LL97) requires NYC buildings over 25,000 sq ft to meet strict carbon emission limits starting in 2024, targeting a 40% reduction by 2030 and 80% by 2050. Owners must invest in efficiency upgrades or renewable energy, facing penalties if limits are exceeded, accelerating the city's decarbonization.

Build a Network of Urban Hubs

April 2, 2025 @ 1:00 NYC time

This discussion continues our exploration of micro cargo, urban hubs, and real estate repurposing, now with an emphasis on actionable solutions. Building on insights in a roundtable led by Sandra Rothbard, and from experts in cities like LA and Zurich (download summary PDF), we aim to develop a tactical plan to transform vacant retail and unused spaces in FiDi into multifunctional urban hubs addressing cargo, transit, waste, and public toilet needs. This hub network could enable pedestrianization, improve real estate values, and support NYC's 2030 World's Fair goals — especially crucial amid uncertain federal funding.

Participants
Jeff Olsen – Cofounder of Citibike and re:Charge-e, Advisory Board of World Resource Institute, Author and university lecturer.
Paul Mondesire – Serial Micro Mobility: helped lead launch of Lime in NYC. Also Superpedestrian, Unlimited Biking, and Clip. Community expert.
Marc Liu – Co-founder of Civilized Cycles, Minnesota Freight Advisory Committee.
Clare Miflin - Founder, Center for Zero Waste Design, and Founder ThinkWoven. Led development of NYC's Zero Waste Design Guidelines.

UNCERTAINTY. Congestion pricing and transport funding face risks from DC. Streetsblog reports rush-hour commutes into Manhattan improved 10–48% in early 2025. The MTA notes fewer bus delays in the zone. Initial revenue is strong, with MTA reporting $48.7M collected in January 2025.

Trade shows like the Consumer Electronics Show provide global platforms for innovation, while a micro, urban World’s Fair engages the public with city-living solutions — Carbon Zero events boost brand visibility, attract media and investors, and strengthen NYC’s climate leadership, economy, and job creation. All are designed to bring companies from around the world and establish them in NYC. Trade shows focus on B2B, World’s Fairs on B2C.

World\'s Fair as a Promoter of Innovation

A Concept for NYC

Invent City will have the same two serious objectives. First, push back on the climate crisis. Second, juice NYC\'s economy from industrial expansion and enhanced tourism. This would be NYC\'s fourth World\'s Fair.
