NYC DOT Authorizes On-Street 'Microhub Zones' to Combat Negative Environmental and Safety Effects of Truck Deliveries

(DOT, January 14, 2025)

DOT's Move is Bold. We’re excited to invite you to our next Carbon Zero City Roundtable on February 19th to explore opportunities. Co-moderated by Sandra Rothbard, AICP, an expert in last-mile delivery, city logistics, emergency management, and community engagement, with experience spanning Sidewalk Labs, NYC DOT, and more, she now teaches at Georgia Tech and leads Freight Matters. Past roundtables have featured Fernhay, Civilized, EAV, Dutch-X, The Hub Bicycles, the North American Cargo Bike Conference, and other stars. We look forward to your insights.

The key discussion will focus on NYC DOT’s proposal for 36 Microhub Zones, dedicated public spaces for micro-cargo, and the potential for multi-use Urban Hubs that integrate micro-transit, waste management, and public amenities. A network of Urban Hubs would be crucial for pedestrianizing FiDi’s streets and enabling large-scale urban events, including a micro, urban world's fair.

Sample Major Trade Events

Trade shows like the Consumer Electronics Show provide global platforms for innovation, while a micro, urban World’s Fair engages the public with city-living solutions — Carbon Zero events boost brand visibility, attract media and investors, and strengthen NYC’s climate leadership, economy, and job creation. All are designed to bring companies from around the world and establish them in NYC. Trade shows focus on B2B, World’s Fairs on B2C.

World's Fair as a Promoter of Innovation

A Concept for NYC

Carbon Zero City will have the same two serious objectives. First, push back on the climate crisis. Second, juice NYC's economy from industrial expansion and enhanced tourism. This would be NYC's fourth World's Fair.
